Oral Motor and Myofunctional Therapy
Providing Tailored Myofunctional Therapy for Children
Assessing the rest posture and functions of the tongue, jaw, and lips is an essential part of an evaluation. Orofacial myofunctional disorders, if left unaddressed, can have a significant impact on long-term health. The resting position of the tongue in the mouth plays a crucial role in the body’s development and growth. Long Island Speech and Feeding Therapy works collaboratively with a patient’s entire care team, which may include primary care, otolaryngology, dental care, orthodontics, maxillofacial surgeons, physical therapy, chiropractic care, and/or allergy care.
We work with patients of all ages to effectively treat a wide range of health issues, including but not limited to:
- Tongue and lip ties
- Tongue thrust for speech, chewing and swallowing
- TMJ Dysfunction (temporomandibular joint)
- Snoring and sleep issues
- Orthodontic cases/relapse
- Mouth breathing and open lips/mouth posture
How do we help?
We treat the following diagnoses with Myofunctional Therapy
At Long Island Speech and Feeding Therapy, we specialize in identifying patterns and habits of the muscles of the face, mouth, and tongue that may cause issues with normal dentition, facial appearance, and swallowing.
There are various types of orofacial disorders, and each disorder requires an individual evaluation, especially when there are dental, medical, or speech concerns. Treatment is crucial to ensure normal growth and development and to promote progress in a stable and balanced environment.
We create a safe and effective environment, treating myofunctional disorders and promoting long-term oral health.
